Sharing economy accommodations: What will the future look like?
The sharing economy has been growing at a remarkable speed for years. It is an attractive sector for businesses and consumers, in good part because it makes efficient use of existing assets.
One segment of the sharing economy that has been attracting a lot of attention is accommodations. Airbnb is the iconic brand in this segment, but in fact, the ecosystem is populated by many companies, including large platforms (including Expedia’s HomeAway, Booking.com, and others), smaller property management companies, and many ancillary services, from online booking tools to cleaning services and beyond.
Where do we go from here?
As science fiction writer William Gibson memorably wrote, “The future is already here – it’s just not very evenly distributed.” In other words, by looking at things that are popping up here and there in the present, we can get some good insights into the future.
